Tournament Information


The Desert Duel Summer Prep Memorial is an elite boys basketball invitational that brings together the most talented high school basketball players in the country for a high-octane tournament to crown the national boy’s basketball summer champion. Participating teams are handpicked by the respected tournament organizing committee and are guaranteed four games against the nation’s top talent.

Hosted in beautiful Gilbert, Arizona on July 27 - 28, the Desert Duel attracts the country’s top college coaches, recruiters and talent scouts to watch the elite prep players in the world showcase their talent. The entry fee for all teams is waived thanks to generous donations from our sponsors.

2009 Tournament Highlights

Desert Duel in the news! The 2009 tournament was featured in an ESPN Article.

We are proud to say that the 2009 Desert Duel Memorial was 100% NCAA compliant. The NCAA said that the tournament was the best and most organized event they have ever attended.

We had a fantastic turnout - here’s who joined us in the desert…
• Representatives from 171 colleges, including every PAC 10 school, every Big 12, 10 of 11 Big Ten, 14 of the 16 SEC, 11 of 12 ACC, and 13 of 16 Big East.
• 251+ college coaches.
• 33 of the top 100 players in the country.
• National and local media.

TOURNAMENT REGISTRATION


Registration to the invitation-only Desert Duel Memorial Tournament is free to participating teams.

Rules


TOURNAMENT CHECK-IN

  1. Teams must arrive in Phoenix, Arizona on July 26, 2011 (the day before tournament play begins) for registration between the hours of 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM.
  2. Teams must register at the tournament headquarters prior to playing their first game.
  3. Teams will be issued coaches passes for NCAA Certified Coaches only. Only NCAA Certified Coaches are allowed to sit on the team bench during the team’s games.
  4. Teams must view the NCAA educational video at the competition. The video will be shown at the Team Welcome Lunch.
  5. If a team arrives too late for registration at the tournament headquarters, it must register prior to playing its first game.


COACHES CERTIFICATION & PLAYER ROSTER

Teams must be made up of players from within your state, with no more than three players from adjoining states.


Playing Rules

Playing rules are those adopted by the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations with the following exceptions:

SCHEDULING/PLAYING TIMES

  • All games will be played with a stopped clock format.
  • Games will be played in two 16-minute halves.
  • There are 7 minutes between games and 2 minutes between halves.

FOULS
  • On the seventh (7th) team foul, the opposing team will be in the one & one bonus.
  • On the tenth (10th) team foul, the opposing team will be in the double bonus situation.
  • A player will foul out on his 5th foul.

TIME-OUTS
A team will be permitted (4) 30-second time-outs per game. Time-outs will carry over. An additional time-out will be allowed for each overtime period.

OVERTIME
If an overtime is required, the first period will be (2) minutes. The second overtime will be sudden death. The championship game will not have a sudden death overtime.

DUNKING
Please be aware that dunking in warm-up is NOT ALLOWED by High School Federation rules.

GRACE PERIOD
There is no grace period. Plan to be at the gym at least 45 minutes before a scheduled game.

CODES OF CONDUCT
Desert Duel demands a certain level of conduct from all coaches, players and fans participating in any of its tournaments. The following penalties will be imposed at all Desert Duel sanctioned tournaments.
  • Any coach, player or fan ejected from his/her team’s game by a referee, gym supervisor or tournament official must leave the gym immediately and will not be allowed into the gym for the team’s next game. Two ejections will result in expulsion for the remainder of the tournament.
  • Any player, coach or fan who engages in any physical altercation or destruction of property at any time during their stay will be ejected from the remainder of the tournament.
  • Each team is responsible for all damages caused by any member of its party. It is the sole responsibility of the team’s administration to make good on all claims by hotels, transportation rental agencies or playing sites where the damage occurred.
  • This tournament has instituted a zero tolerance for drug and alcohol abuse. Anyone found in violation of this policy will be ejected from the remainder of the tournament.
